Technical Analysis and Elastomer Selection: Preventing Critical Issues in Sealing Systems

In the sealing systems sector, the selection of elastomeric materials represents one of the most critical aspects of the entire design process. In Italy, where applications range from advanced construction to manufacturing industries and systems exposed to aggressive environments, an incorrect choice can significantly compromise component performance over time.
By their nature, elastomers are subject to degradation phenomena linked to environmental, chemical, and mechanical factors. Loss of elasticity, compression set, micro-cracking, and infiltration are just some of the issues that may arise in the absence of thorough technical analysis.
Materials such as EPDM, silicone, or special elastomers must therefore be selected not only based on their initial properties, but also by considering the entire product lifecycle and the actual operating conditions.
An Engineering Approach Based on Data and Validation
GLOB adopts an engineering-driven approach to material selection, supported by the research and development centers of the Reda Group. This approach is based on laboratory testing, comparative analysis, and simulations that make it possible to evaluate compound behavior under realistic conditions.
Material selection is never standardized but stems from an in-depth analysis of application parameters. Environmental conditions—such as exposure to UV radiation, ozone, or chemical agents—are carefully assessed, along with the thermal and mechanical stresses to which the component will be subjected, including cyclic compression and repeated deformation.
Operating temperature also plays a key role, both in static and dynamic conditions, as does compatibility with other materials within the application system.
Performance Stability and Long-Term Durability
One of the most relevant aspects concerns the material’s ability to maintain its performance over time. An elastomer that appears suitable at the initial stage may degrade rapidly if not properly formulated or dimensioned.
For this reason, GLOB develops solutions that take into account long-term compound behavior, resistance to accelerated aging, and the retention of elastic properties. Particular attention is also paid to the integrity of vulcanized joints, often a critical element in sealing systems.
These evaluations are especially important in applications exposed to extreme conditions, such as industrial environments with aggressive agents, high-temperature contexts, or architectural applications subject to significant climatic variations.
Reduction of Design Risk
A test- and validation-based approach allows for a significant reduction in design risk. On-site corrective actions, premature replacements, and disputes related to non-compliant performance represent indirect costs that are often underestimated but can heavily impact the overall project economy.
In this context, material selection becomes a strategic lever, not just a technical one. Relying on a partner capable of integrating material expertise, industrial capability, and scientific validation increases overall system reliability and optimizes long-term performance.
